Carver

I have no idea where we’d be if it weren’t Cooper’s fast thinking. The Grenades. Remembering the old tunnels under the bar—we spent way too much time down in these tunnels getting drunk together. Old man Williard would get so pissed at us, but nothing compared to the lashing we’d get from dad when he found out.

Did it stop us? Nope.

We lost the Ferals at the entrance leading down into the sewers. They screamed and howled but they couldn’t breach the hatch. Small blessings and all that.

I see nothing but red when we reach the opening to the sewer—dumping us out on the river's edge just outside the city—and Tucker is on the other side. That bastard almost got us killed.

“Son of a bitch,” I roar.

He pales and makes an attempt to run but I’m on him before he takes a step, tackling him hard. I straddle his chest and drive my fist into his face. Bones crack and pain shoots through my entire hand but it’s nothing compared to the rage boiling in my blood. Who does that? Who sacrifices others to save themselves?

“We saved your asses back there.” Punch. “And you nearly got us killed up there.” Punch. “Fucking coward!”

A firm hand grabs me by the arm. “It’s enough, Carver,” Shepard urges.

Nah, fuck that. I’m going to beat the living shit out of this asshole until he’s choking on his own blood.

Another hard jerk makes me glare over my shoulder but it’s Cooper standing there now. “Let him go, we don’t have time for this.”

The hell we don’t…

Come on, Car… we aren’t in the clear here. We gotta keep moving.

I grab Tucker by the collar and jerk him up so we’re nose to nose. “You aren’t in charge anymore. Got it? You take orders from me now. You don’t talk unless I say so. You don’t move unless I say so. You don’t take a goddamn piss without my permission.”

“You can’t—”

My fist cuts him off and I whip my head up at his little group. “Y’all wanna follow him? Hmm? Wait and see who he leaves behind next to die?”

What a surprise? Not a single one of his people are willing to speak up and back their guy. I don’t blame them. He’s a selfish coward.

“You either learn to follow orders real quick or you take your chances out here alone. Your choice.”

I push off him to my feet and he gives me a well-deserved middle finger but he sure doesn’t open his mouth. Or maybe he can’t. His face is a bloody swollen mess. Good. Bastard deserves worse.

“Where is the convoy?” I turn and ask Berkeley. “We left you with three trucks and a dozen wolves, at least.”

“Sent them back with two of the trucks. The other we had to abandon at the entrance to the city because of the barricades.”

Fuck. I forgot about those, and there isn’t a chance in hell Tristan won’t be watching that truck like a hawk now.

Cooper eyes me and I can see the gears working as he tries to figure out our next move.
